You can enjoy the surroundings as soon as you step out of your door, as you walk straight from the gîte into the woods and fields. A number of maps and information sheets are available for you from the cottage, but to discover more walking and/or cycling routes, we advise you to download the app “Komoot”.
And if you are a birdwatcher, enjoy the many species of birds that you can find here (hundreds, maybe thousands of Cranes winter here).
To get an idea of the surrounding nature, we would like to introduce you to a few beautiful areas here;
The Loire River
Often seen as Europe’s last wild river, it is famous for its “river dynamics”. Banks erode, secondary estuaries form, islets of deposited sand develop and are washed away again. They provide conditions where diverse -sometimes endangered- fauna and flora can develop. To preserve this exceptional heritage, a large part of the Loire has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1995.
The Bertranges forest
The history of the Bertranges forest massif dates back to the year 1121, when the forest was offered to the priory of the city of La Charité . After numerous donations and purchases, the prior of the abbey managed an estate of 3,700 hectares of forest and shrubs. Today it is a national forest extending over 10,000 hectares, planted mainly with oaks. It is the second-largest oak-producing forest in France. Hiking and cycling trails allow you to make a wonderful exploration of this ancient forest. In this forest, one can also find ‘la Fontaine de la Vache’ a source which has powerful energy, for those who believe. And don’t forget to visit ‘le rond point de la reserve’, where you can find a 250-years old oak tree.
There are also many landscaped gardens/parks in the area that can be visited. You can find more information about this in the extensive tourist folder we have ready for you.
